Updated · 4 min read · By Gulfshore Transportation, Naples, FL

The short answer

From downtown Naples, Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is about 33 miles away: 35 to 50 minutes most of the day, and up to about 65 minutes on a weekday afternoon. Miami International (MIA) takes about 2 to 2½ hours and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) about 1½ to 2 hours.

For a domestic flight out of RSW, leave Naples about 3 hours before departure. Make it 3½ hours from January through April, when Naples is at its busiest.

Each range runs from Google Maps' typical estimate to its heavy-traffic estimate. On a clear road with no traffic, downtown Naples to RSW is about 37 minutes.

Source: Google Maps traffic estimates for weekdays in October 2026, measured October 20, 2026. Google's estimates for February and March come out the same as October, so they don't show the winter rush. From January through April, plan on the higher number.

Why the season changes the plan

Naples is a seasonal town. From roughly January through April, seasonal residents and visitors fill the city, and the main roads to the airport slow down: US-41 (Tamiami Trail), Pine Ridge Road, Immokalee Road and the I-75 interchanges. RSW is at its busiest then too, so check-in and security lines run longer.

Summer and fall are lighter on the roads, but afternoon thunderstorms can slow I-75 quickly. In any month, the slowest window in our measurements was the weekday afternoon rush. Leaving Naples around 4:30 p.m. on a Friday added up to half an hour to the RSW drive.

When to leave Naples for your flight

Airlines generally suggest arriving 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Add the heavy-traffic drive time and a 15 to 20 minute cushion, and you get these departure times from downtown Naples:

When to leave downtown Naples, counted back from your flight's departure time
AirportDomestic flightInternational flight
RSW (Fort Myers)3 hours before (3½ in season or on a weekday afternoon)4 to 4½ hours before
MIA (Miami)4½ to 5 hours before5½ to 6 hours before
FLL (Fort Lauderdale)4 to 4½ hours before5 to 5½ hours before

From Marco Island, add about 20 minutes for RSW. From North Naples, RSW is a few minutes closer than from downtown.

The routes to Miami and Fort Lauderdale

Most trips to the east coast take I-75 across Alligator Alley, a toll road through the Everglades with very few places to stop. For Fort Lauderdale, the route then follows I-595 east toward the airport. For Miami, it continues south. US-41 (Tamiami Trail) is the slower, scenic alternative to Miami.

On a two-hour drive, a private car lets you work, rest or keep the family comfortable instead of watching the road. Our Chevrolet Suburban seats up to 6 passengers with full-size luggage.
